Description

The Kazan Icon of the Mother of God, discovered in 1579, is one of the most revered icons in Russian Orthodox Christianity. Depicting Mary and the Christ Child in the “Hodegetria” style, it symbolizes salvation. Found after a fire in Kazan, it features a gold background, solemn figures, and elaborate gold halos.

The icon has been linked to Russia’s protection, especially during invasions. It is commemorated on July 8 and October 22, marking its discovery and Moscow’s 1612 liberation.

This sacred artwork, attributed to an unknown master, features a gilded and silver-plated representation of the revered icon of Our Lady of Kazan. Framed within the Byzantine tradition, the central image depicts the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, their features delicately rendered with an expression of divine serenity and compassion. The ornate metalwork, with finely engraved patterns and gold-leaf detailing, enhances the spiritual luminosity of the piece. The composition’s rich texture and reflective surfaces evoke a sense of divine presence, making this a profound object of devotion and artistic mastery. As one of the most venerated icons in Russian Orthodox Christianity, this artwork embodies a timeless connection between faith and craftsmanship, preserving centuries of religious and artistic heritage.
